The Magic Box

The "tennis-centric" athletic complex in Manzanares Park better known as Caja Mágica (Magic Box) will be one of the most eye-catching, significant buildings in world sports architecture.

The project was designed by Dominique Perrault architect .

The main building, measuring 82,520 m2, houses three courts: The central court, which seats over 12,000, the Ópera court, with 3,194, and the Circo court, with 2,730. All three courts are fitted with roofs that can be rocked back for play under the open sky.

The biggest roof is 103 metres long by 73 metres wide. There is also an indoor tennis building, which has got 11 indoor courts; a high-performance centre; a tennis school with its own gymnasium, restaurants and administrative services; the Media Garden lying by the lake; and the Tennis Garden, an island that has got 16 tennis courts (two grass courts, two hard courts and twelve clay courts).

In the Magic Box's design, Perrault has blended high technology with environmental friendliness. As such. the pavilions have a protective covering that changes according to the seasons, light, temperature and the different events.

The maximum number of spectators this landmark athletic complex will be able to seat will be 20,500.
