History

FCC has been building since 1900, initially through Fomento de Obras y Construcciones (FOCSA) and since the mid-1950s as Construcciones y Contratas, S.A. (CYCSA), although each company acted separately.

The company initially operated in Catalonia, mainly working in the building sector. The contracting in 1911 of sewerage cleaning and maintenance services in Barcelona was an important milepost in the company's history, making it a pioneer in the policy of diversification.

In the first half of the 20th century, the company operated in both the building and services sectors and carried out large projects in the era such as the 10 km Girona-Olot railway, the Sants and Barcelona terminus stations, the Vallcarca, Argentona and Ripollet viaducts and the company headquarters building for the Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas, S.A. group in the Calle Balmes in Barcelona, included in the city's Architectural, Historical and Artistic catalogue.

In the 1950s, the Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas group occupied an outstanding position among the companies in the building sector.

In 1992 FCC was formed from the merger of FOCSA and CYCSA.

In 1994 FCC decided to organise itself on the basis of companies specialising in each of the large sectors in which it was present and thus started the grouping under a single header, FCC Construcción, of all building activity, the integration process ending in 2000 with the block transfer of the projects, personnel and references that still remained in FCC.

In 2006 it acquired ALPINE, the second Austrian building company which also operated in Germany and in various eastern countries, to strengthen the position of FCC Construcción internationally.

The international activity was consolidated in 2009; now, 53% of business is carried out abroad, being the first time that the international busines overcomes the native.

FCC Construcción is the current heir to the experience accumulated by a business group that has been an exceptional witness to 100 years of history in Spain.
